-- Posted by Illuvatar on Saturday, July 17 2004 at 5:43 PM GMT

It's not often that an Oscar-winning film composer visits Seattle to conduct his best-known score. So it was no surprise that Benaroya Hall was filled to capacity Thursday night for Howard Shore's "Lord of the Rings Symphony," an exquisite two-hour distillation of the composer's epic 12-hour score for Peter Jackson's phenomenal "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Beowulf Attacks Warners!

-- Posted by Illuvatar on Saturday, July 17 2004 at 6:52 AM GMT

Warner Bros. is turning one of the oldest poems in English literature into a big-screen adventure.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is setting up an epic production of Beowulf, the Old English poem that dates back to the eighth century.

The poem, which is thought to have inspired Tolkien to write The Lord of the Rings, tells of an ancient warrior, Beowulf of the Geats, who must slay Grendel, an evil creature that is attacking a Danish kingdom.  Ultimately, the warrior defeats Grendel, slays his mother and faces off with a fire-breathing dragon.

Gollum Delivers Water-Saving Message!!!

-- Posted by Illuvatar on Friday, July 16 2004 at 3:28 AM GMT

The serious message of water conservation takes a humorous and creative slant with the small screen debut of "The Lord of the Streams" on Metropolitan Water District's Web site.

Metropolitan's 90-second movie parodies J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which was adapted into three major motion pictures. Like the big-screen versions, Metropolitan's adaptation features Tolkien's character Gollum, a hobbit driven mad by the loss of his precious ring.

Whale Rider pips Lord of the Rings in viewer poll...

-- Posted by Illuvatar on Friday, July 16 2004 at 3:24 AM GMT

The latest NBR-Phillips Fox poll richly illustrates how pervasive the success of New Zealand as a film making country has been on the population.

Nearly 70% of New Zealanders have seen one or two Lord of the Rings films. Thirty-nine per cent saw all three films and 45% went to Whale Rider.

In an entertaining finding that doesn't mean much -- given it rated three films against one, and many viewers hadn't seen all three Rings movies -- but entertaining all the same, more people said they enjoyed Whale Rider than Lord of the Rings.

Movies' future: No sets, actors?

-- Posted by Illuvatar on Friday, July 16 2004 at 3:12 AM GMT

What if they put central casting on a hard drive and put it online, so that a movie studio could enter a password and download Lauren Bacall? Now there's a concept.
Serious watchers of video technology think it might happen. The reason is that everything in the movie-video business is going digital, which has all sorts of effects.

One Domain to rule them all!!

-- Posted by Illuvatar on Wednesday, July 14 2004 at 5:47 PM GMT

The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films may have appeared to have made the impossible real, but now its backers want more.

While there is no doubt they are the masters of Middle Earth, and all the plastic merchandise that can be forged in the Mountains of Cashin, Warners Brothers, New Line Productions and The Saul Zaentz Company are now determined to extend their dominion.

The Internet lives in a sort of virtual world, so it should come as no surprise that the film's producers and the bloke who bought the film rights off United Artists in 1976 for a set of books by JRR Tolkien (yes, there are books of the film), should seek to gain control of www.shiremail.com.
