South Africa claims partial credit for Lord of the Rings -- Posted by kenzie on Thursday, March 18 2004 at 12:17 AM GMT
Encouraged by Charlize Theron's Oscar triumph (she won the Oscar for her portrayal of U.S. serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the film Monster), South Africa is now reaching further for Oscar gold.
The author of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, J.R.R. Tolkien, was born in Bloemfontein in 1892, trivia experts in South Africa note. Young Tolkien spent just three years in South Africa before his family returned to Britain, but that hasn't stopped South Africa from claiming another 11 Oscars - for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" - as its own.
"It's nice to know that maybe, just maybe, Tolkien carried a part of South Africa in his heart with him after his family returned to the land of gray skies," one South African newspaper wrote, "and that he may never have been inspired to write about Hobbits and the like had he not seen the glorious landscapes of South Africa through his young eyes.".....source

Lord of the Strings Part 2 -- Posted by Nienna_Miriel on Wednesday, March 17 2004 at 7:49 PM GMT
When I saw the latest in the Lord of the Rings trilogy of movies a short while ago, I wondered how Tolkien had invented the artificial languages of Middle Earth. In my previous article, I told of my desire to discover which real language had been the biggest influence on Tolkien for his invented ones. As a software developer, I wanted to discover this information algorithmically. My idea was to use my own string similarity algorithm to compare each word from a list of Tolkien words to words from 14 other real languages. For each Tolkien word, I would find and record the language with the word that is (lexically) most similar. The set of most-similar words and the languages from which they came would provide new insights into the influences on Tolkien. . . . more
