McKellen shines in touching Emile -- Posted by kenzie on Saturday, March 27 2004 at 11:20 PM GMT
It's useful to be reminded that, first and foremost, Ian McKellen is a veteran actor, not just a fantasy superhero or a comic-book supervillain. His performances as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy or as Magneto in the X-Men series had an astonishing depth and complexity, but it's good to see him in something more conventional and yet challenging, such as the title character in Emile, an intimate Canadian film by Carl Bessai. This is the last and best film in Bessai's disjointed trilogy about individuals searching for identity......more

The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (PlayStation 2) -- Posted by Nienna_Miriel on Saturday, March 27 2004 at 8:05 PM GMT
Let's face it; even if this game sucked eggs, you'd still want to play it just because the Lord of the Rings trilogy endorses it. Just the chance to play as Gandalf itself should be full paisa vasool for fans of the series. Nonetheless as you've probably made out from the review score that this game doesn't suck; far from it, this game may just about be one of the finest movie games to grace our consoles in recent times. Wanna know why? Well, read the review. . . more

Hits and myths -- Posted by Dawn_Noelle on Saturday, March 27 2004 at 7:26 PM GMT
The Lord of the Rings is one of the all-time selling books for children, but how original is the story? In a seminal paper published in 1936, Oxford scholar J. R. R. Tolkien argued for the artistic integrity and greatness of the Anglo-Saxon epic, Beowulf. The poem's Nordic hero destroys monsters on land and in undersea lairs and, after ruling as king for 50 years, meets his death while slaying a gold-hoarding, fire-breathing dragon. A year later, Tolkien published The Hobbit, a tale for children and adults that comes to a climax with a battle against . . . a gold-hoarding, fire-breathing dragon.....more
Radagast's Ramblings: Was Tolkien a racist? -- Posted by Radagast on Saturday, March 27 2004 at 2:59 PM GMT
When Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings was published, people accused it of being discriminating and chauvinistic. Mainly because there were no black people in his trilogy. And also because the female characters were completely dominated by the male race. Some people saw this as a disgrace and it was a big topic, especially because it was in the mid 50’s and racism was a big problem. Tolkien was very disappointed, and he had a hard time understanding the accusations. There is no doubt that when Tolkien grew up, boys had more power and authority than girls. He also joined various “small societies” where skilled males (and only males), would meet and discuss various things. These examples were pointed out to be so called “evidence” in accusations, that Tolkien was discriminating and chauvinistic. In my humble opinion: We know that Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings as a mythology, that was supposed to have taken place in England, 7000 years ago. If you think about how dominating the male race has been all through history, why would it be any different 7000 years ago? I mean, it was not until the mid 1900-century, that women were allowed to vote. Imagine how it would have been, thousands of years ago... Black people in Tolkien’s books. Think of it, there were no black people in England 7000 years ago. The only people you could think of, as black people in Tolkien’s books are the “dark skinned” men from the south. So wasn’t Tolkien just trying to be realistic? I for one don’t think he was a racist. One of the messages with Tolkien’s books is in fact, understanding and tolerance shown in the two characters Legolas and Gimli. Discuss this on the forums... Here

The face of the sexy LORD OF THE RINGS actor adorns the side of an AIR NEW ZEALAND plane, the country where the Rings trilogy was filmed. But modest Mortensen, 45, finds the situation surreal, as well as a bit frightening. He says, "Its scary. I don't know if all this that's happening is about timing. Nugent is a special effects compositor. He set up his Pittsfield office, very quietly, a little over a year ago to finish work on “The Return of the King.” In fact, he kept his involvement in the film a secret until it was released to theaters at the end of 2003. “When I was in New Zealand, I had the distinct feeling of being a part of a much larger process,” he said. “It was definitely history on the making, flying to locations, watching the sun rise over larger than life landscapes, experiencing the costumes, the extras, the battle scenes — you knew it was going to be big.”.....more

Of course its only reasonable, it has been in cinema's for more than 14 weeks. But things are looking different overseas where ROTK is still grossing millions every week. The overseas total is actually a stunning $708,889,182. Hidalgo has in the USA, grossed more than $50,000,000. So despite the rocky opening things are looking better for Viggo, and his beloved horse. Experts are predicting a fair gross for Hidalgo worldwide, not extraordinary.. but enough to cover the production budget.
