Interesting Essay on Tolkien and the War on Terrorism

-- Posted by Fatty on Thursday, July 25 2002 at 10:56 PM GMT

The conservative and liberal élites have been portraying Bush's war on terrorism as a sort of crusade of good against evil. They have even tried to enlist John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892–1973) – author of the "Book of the Century," The Lord of the Rings for this endeavor. In their view, the coalition led by the United States is like the "league of the free" who fight against Sauron of Mordor – that is, bin Laden of Afghanistan.

Actually, this comparison is deeply mistaken.......more

Gaming Section Expanding Soon!

-- Posted by Fatty on Tuesday, July 23 2002 at 4:20 AM GMT

As you will have noticed we have plenty of gaming footage downloads but not much in the Gaming section itself. This will be changing shortly. Lots to be added to the PC/Console section including previews of all the games on each format, release schedule and screenshots.

For a taster look who is coming up on The Fellowship of the Ring game for the PC. I wonder who that could be.....:-)

Is this Bombadil and Goldberry?

The Tabletop section will also be getting its first battle scenario. Ugluks Stand has been converted from the report in the Armoury into a general set of rules for fighting the battle. We hope to make more specific scenario's too. Starting with one for Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

Dubious Honour

-- Posted by Fatty on Monday, July 22 2002 at 6:08 PM GMT

The Fellowship of the Ring has now surpassed The Lion King in the top grossing movies of all time in the USA. Though one wonders how much this really means given that most of these lists do not adjust for inflation. If it was tickets sold rather than actual revenue then they might be more meaningful.

You can see the details over at Box Office Mojo

UK Censor Passes Fellowship DVD Unscathed

-- Posted by Fatty on Sunday, July 21 2002 at 4:55 AM GMT

Good news for all UK Tolkien fans. The extended version of The Fellowship of the Ring has been passed by the BBFC with the same PG certificate it had during the cinema release.

Problem could have arisen if the extended footage warranted a higher rating. Since in UK law a film cannot have a different rating for its DVD/video release.

Dreamcast Two Towers Preview

-- Posted by Fatty on Sunday, July 21 2002 at 4:39 AM GMT

Two Towers' structure (16 levels based on the 'most memorable movie moments from the first two films') and gameplay look most likely to appeal to gamers who loved the movie, rather than to LOTR universe purists. You can't control all nine Fellowship members or decide what flavour tea to have at Bilbo's birthday party. And while other Fellowship members take 'an active role during gameplay', you can only play as.............more
