What a Let Down! -- Posted by Fatty on Wednesday, September 25 2002 at 4:36 AM GMT
Well we are to launch a leader column soon with some editorials and critical takes on what is going on in the world of Tolkien and Lord of the Rings. However, we thought we would pre-empt it with some comment regarding the new trailer release. Available on AOL for 24 hours. Now knock me down with a big stick but is this how we all get rewarded for our loyalty. Going to see the movie countless times, buying all kinds of merchandise, from the ridiculous to the sublime. Always sticking up for the movie, enthusing friends and relatives relentlesly to go and see it. Buying the DVD and the 2nd DVD and the 3rd..... Well seems so we get landed with some kind of dodgy corporate pay back. I mean not to slander AOL but they do have err... a few detractors. So why make the trailer available only to users of this paid service. So much for respecting the fans and giving them soemthing back. Now fair enough lets not get carried away it will be on the official site 24 hours later. But the principal is deeply flawed and a reminder to us all that this is a commercial operation , they may appreciate the fans but at the end of the day it is all about money. IMHO Fatty

Something on The Calcium Kid I stumbled upon... -- Posted by Asfaloth on Tuesday, September 24 2002 at 6:38 AM GMT
From Empire Magazine... Pop Starlets On The Big Screen: Men all over the world rejoice. Australian pop vixen and former Neighbours star, Natalie Imbruglia, is brushing up on her acting skills, practising her American accent and trying out those action-chick moves in a bid for cinematic stardom. Having just wrapped new spy spoof Johnny English with Rowan Atkinson, the diminutive Aussie has expressed her desire to resurrect her acting career. “I did some fight scenes and I loved it, which I never imagined I would," she enthused. Slightly less welcome is the news that Mrs Evans – aka Billy Piper – has also been filming this week opposite Orlando Bloom in his new project, The Calcium Kid. Please stick to the music if anything, we beg you…
Gandalf on the Extended Version! -- Posted by Asfaloth on Tuesday, September 24 2002 at 6:36 AM GMT
From Sir Ian McKellen's Homepage: Gandalf Approves: Dispensing wisdom on his official site, Sir Ian McKellen has given his wholehearted approval to Peter Jackson's upcoming extended edition Fellowship of the Ring DVD, indicating that that, rather than being a shameless cash-in is how the film was meant to be seen. "My impression was that this cut is superior to the previous one and that it is a pity that there are as yet no plans to show it in the cinema, where managers gulp at the thought of a three and a half hour movie, with no interval and thereby less-remunerative refreshment sales," Sir Ian posted on the site. "But perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps it's the greed of one already sated that makes this extra dish so appetising. At first sitting the original cut may be easier to digest. But this DVD is a must for the devotee."
Gandalf Comes to Town -- Posted by Fatty on Tuesday, September 24 2002 at 5:09 AM GMT
You'd have thought it was Mick Jagger arriving in town instead of respected British Shakespearean actor Sir Ian McKellen. Before Sir Ian's arrival Saturday, callers jammed the phones at the AIDS Walk office to find out how to catch a glimpse of the actor who plays the wizard Gandalf in "Lord of the Rings." Sir Ian, a gay-rights activist, came here primarily to take part in yesterday's AIDS Walk at Seattle Center. He stayed at the Grand Hyatt Seattle and appeared at a press conference with Mayor Greg Nickels, who presented him with an engraved ring. Sir Ian also made time to dine, Seattle style. 1200 Bistro owners Keith Moergeli, Kenny Carlson and Jim Deitchler hosted the star and 10 companions for dinner Saturday night. Among them: actor/director Alan Cumming.

The competition will close in a day or so. Get your entry in now to win a great statuette of Saruman. If you need a final hint as to where that pesky wizard lurks on the site. Think swords and which one Thorin wielded. If you can't get it after that then you need to read the books again ;-)

Well some more great stories, of how you discovered Tolkien, from your good selves. Head over to the soon to be expanded books section to read more or click here. Why not send your own story in. Note that the new stories have a simpler layout, this is just to make it a bit easier to add new ones.
Spanish Tolkien Party Project -- Posted by Fatty on Monday, September 23 2002 at 3:10 PM GMT
On December 18th, 2002 it will open in theatres all over the world the second part of the long-expected trilogy of 'The Lord of the Rings', 'The Two Towers'. In Beleg Aderthad, a humble corner in Internet created by and for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and his works in http://www.belegaderthad.com, we want all the fans of the Oxford's professor to enjoy a premiere in which Middle-earth becomes the bench mark for a party without precedent. A show worthy to be seen next to people like us, neighbors and friends and the rest of Tolkien's fans of the same community.
Beleg's aim is not only to join forces to enjoy Tolkien's works, its mythology and, of course, the movie in its maximum expression, being able thus to live an unforgettable experience. The Beleg Aderthad has been also created to achieve that all fans can attend the event. For that reason, in each city, in each region or in each geographical territory, there can be a small or great Beleg, where fans organize the activities that later on will themselves enjoy, where they organize chats, debates, games, shops and other type of events, besides watching the movie, to animate the rest of fans of the community to join the party.
To coordinate everything we have created this site in Internet, a place prepared so that anyone can create and manage its own group and encourage other fans to join them. A place where all can participate and collaborate by sending news, reports and articles so that the rest of fans discover that there exist other places where people enjoy Tolkien.
We encourage you to participate in a great party, such the one we made last year 2001, when 'The Fellowship of the Ring' was released and more than 1,000 people from all over the world participated in the activities that were organized. To join us, follow these three steps: Enter http://www.belegaderthad.com Check out that there exists a group near to the place where you want to attend the premiere of 'The Two Towers'. If that the group doesn't exist, you can register one for yourself. (consult the 'Grupos' section) Register as participant by means of the form you will find in the site. (section 'Participar')
Once you join us, you will become a part of the Beleg Aderthad and you will open the door to meet people of your city and from all over the world in order to share your love for Tolkien's works. An enriching and unforgettable experience!
