Tolkien Essay at Suite101 -- Posted by Fatty on Friday, June 28 2002 at 6:23 PM GMT
When The Lord of the Rings was first published, some reviewers apparently decided that "all the good [peoples were] just good, and the bad just bad." In indirect response to such complaints, Tolkien noted to one reader: "...the Elves were not wholly good or in the right" (Letter 154). Indeed, none of his characters..............more

Here Comes Kong! -- Posted by Fatty on Wednesday, June 26 2002 at 6:10 PM GMT
Remember when Peter Jackson was just some little filmmaker from New Zealand who made quirkly little movies like Meet The Feebles and Dead/Alive? Then he went off and made Heavenly Creatures and got somewhat respectable, and he followed that with the The Frighteners, one of the most unique films of the 1990s, so misunderstood by the studio that they didn't know how to market it? The guy who dreamt of making The Lord of the Rings into a stumptuous trilogy the way they should have been made?
Yeah, you remember him.
And do you remember what Jackson's backup plan ..........more

The ancient Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, 'The Land of the Long White Cloud' and, flying low out of Auckland airport in the North Island last week, I could see why. An hour of murk south to Wellington and bumping through the depression, rain splattering the windows, we safely landed on the sodden runway. Northern hemisphere readers .......more

The Latest The Two Towers Trailer is Out -- Posted by Fatty on Tuesday, June 25 2002 at 5:00 PM GMT
This one has just been released. It is similar to the one shown at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, but a little shorter. It also has a different narration and a few extra scenes. Not great but worth watching, the direction is a bit off in my opnion.
You can grab it at a few places but they seem to be overloaded, so I have put it on our server. It is in Quicktime format and about 6mb long.

PS2 Fellowship of the Ring Update -- Posted by Fatty on Monday, June 24 2002 at 2:09 AM GMT
There's absolutely no shortage of Lord of the Rings games currently in development, though some have gotten a bit of a higher profile than others. This past E3 equalized everything, though, as each and every game based on the timeless fantasy epic that's currently in development was proudly on display by its respective publisher.
Universal's PS2 game, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, is easily among the most impressive of the lot. The action adventure game retraces the events of the first book in the story and lets you play through the narrative as three of its most important characters: more

Don't keep the Wicker Man waiting! -- Posted by Fatty on Sunday, June 23 2002 at 4:14 PM GMT
Christopher Lee is involved in a sort of remake of The Wicker Man. The original film starred Lee as the aristocratic leader of a pagan comunity. Edward Woodward (The Equalizer) starred as a main-land policeman investigating the case of a missing girl.
He goes to the Island to try and find out more. There he is entagled in the locals bizzare rituals. Notable scenes are his temptation by a nubile Britt Eckland and his tragic martyred death inside the wicker man.
You can see some of the locations the film was was shot at here.
Nicholas Cage is also involved in a rival production.
