Elijah Wood: Don't call me Frodo -- Posted by Nienna_Miriel on Saturday, May 1 2004 at 9:27 PM GMT
We're in the non-smoking Four Seasons Hotel, in the non-smoking city of Los Angeles, in the smoke-free nation of the US of A, and Elijah Wood is puffing on a funny-smelling cigarette. "These are infused with cloves, so they're sweeter," says naughty little Elijah, in explanation, if not exactly as an apology. A healthy smoking option, then? "No - they burn hotter, so they're worse for your lungs. But they do have less nicotine." . . . more

Forever Gollum, Serkis faces up to comedy in '13' -- Posted by Nienna_Miriel on Friday, April 30 2004 at 11:21 PM GMT
It's not intended as an insult to say that one can see a little bit of Gollum in Andy Serkis. Even though the CGI character in the ''Lord of the Rings'' trilogy was largely created by special-effects artists, the character was based on the actor's facial structure and mannerisms. And watching the energetic and physical Serkis in real life, one can instantly spot familiar traits. Indeed, the British actor is constantly recognized in everyday life. . . more

Big time beckons world’s shortest stuntman -- Posted by Nienna_Miriel on Friday, April 30 2004 at 10:49 PM GMT
KIRAN Shah may be small, but his list of film credits for his acting and stunt work can quite rightly be described as massive. The 47-year-old, from Hounslow, who stands at 4ft 1.7ins tall, will have his work commemorated in the 50th edition of the Guinness Book of Records, as the shortest professional stuntman working in films... his recent experiences filming the Lord of the Rings trilogy, where he did stunt work and scenes where the hobbits had to appear small next to the other actors, led to some close friendships between Kiran and the other cast members, as he worked particularly closely with Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen. . . more

Celebs 'keep it real' in the UK -- Posted by Nienna_Miriel on Thursday, April 29 2004 at 8:58 PM GMT
True stars don’t give a toss about what the "ordinary people" think, but when celebrities do want to prove that they’re "keeping it real", for some reason they have a strange habit of coming to Britain to do it.
A couple of years ago, I saw the actor Elijah Wood at LA airport. He was wearing streamers, a party hat and was tooting on a toy trumpet. Trying to appear utterly disinterested, I jabbed my other half in the ribs, whispering "it’s Mr Frodo from Lord of the Rings". . . more [scroll down a bit for the Elijah part]

First of its kind, this is an academic journal, edited by Michael Drout, Douglas Anderson and Verlyn Flieger, is dedicated to Tolkien and his works. Tolkien Studies is an annual journal of scholarship on J.R.R. Tolkien and his works. Since the publication of The Hobbit in 1937, the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien have been admired throughout the world. With the publication in the 1950's of his trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien's fantasy writing began to attract academic attention in both the classroom and the world of scholarship. Most recently, Peter Jackson's three-part movie adaptation has added film-study scholars to those fascinated by Tolkien's work. Tolkien Studies: An Annual Scholarly Review is the first scholarly journal published by an academic press for the purpose of presenting and reviewing the growing body of critical commentary and scholarship about Tolkien's writings. The founding editors--Douglas A. Anderson, Michael D. C. Drout, and Verlyn Flieger--and the members of the editorial board--David Bratman, Carl F. Hostetter, Tom Shippey, Richard C. Behind the Music -- Posted by Nienna_Miriel on Tuesday, April 27 2004 at 8:06 PM GMT
Dawn is breaking over a crowded neighborhood in Madras, and the murmur of early-morning prayers is dispersing the stillness of the night. A solitary light shines from the ground floor of a three-story house. Inside, a lone, curly-haired figure sits at a vast mixing desk, fingers skating across the controls. A.R. Rahman's work is almost finished. For as long as he can remember, Asia's most successful composer has slept through the noise of the day and composed in the silence of the night. . . . Last year, he composed the martial score for Chinese director He Ping's Warriors of Heaven and Earth. This week, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Bombay Dreams, for which Rahman wrote the music, transfers from London's West End to Broadway. This resulted in nearly a hundred phone calls to the editor of The Press over the weekend. And even on the day itself some of Christchurch's better known actors still did not know where to go to! Only after many hasty phone calls the location was established as a well-known Performing Arts Academy.....more (Includes pictures of the event.)
